Sciatica

Sciatica is the name given to pain that radiates from the lower back into the buttocks and down the back of one or both legs. It is caused by an irritation of the sciatic nerves, which are the largest nerves in the body. It usually begins as an acute pain in the lower back, and then radiates downward.

There are five pairs of nerves that exit the spine in the lower back, and which make up the sciatic nerves. If vertebrae or bones in the lower back are misaligned or out of place, or if the discs between vertebrae are swollen or herniated, then pressure results against nearby sciatic nerves.
